Anxiety and the Nervous System

Anxiety Through Somatic Lens

Anxiety begins in your nervous system — an instinctive, protective part of you designed to keep you safe from uncertainty and perceived or real threats. The nervous system alerts the amygdala in the brain to assess potential danger. Amygdala plays a crucial role in processing emotions, particularly fear and anxiety, and in the formation and storage of emotional memories. Anxiety manifests as an interaction between the autonomic nervous system, cognitive interpretations, and emotional memories — each contributing to the complex experience of anxiety. From a somatic perspective, anxiety is not a mental challenge, but a survival response, more commonly known as the fight or flight response, that’s become stuck. When stress builds up without resolution or release, your body stays on high alert, bracing for threats even in safe, everyday moments. This cycle can leave you exhausted, tense, or trapped in worry — and eventually burnt out and collapsed, but it doesn’t have to be permanent. 

Anxiety isn’t a personal failing. Your nervous system adapts to and is shaped by your environments and experiences, and our interpretations of them, and sometimes it learns to overprotect. Healing begins when we reconnect and ally with our physiology and our body’s innate wisdom.

Anxiety is a message, not a life-sentence. It’s an invitation for compassionate self-exploration, a chance to grow and make changes, and a catalyst for reshaping old patterns.

Anxiety often fuels a loop between mind and body: physical symptoms lead to worry and racing thoughts in the mind, which in turn amplify and deepen physical discomfort, which at times can spiral into overwhelm and panic. You might feel your world shrinking — exhausted by symptoms, isolated by fear and avoidance, and longing for ease and stability.

  • Emotional/Cognitive: Excessive planning, worry/fear, irritability, racing or intrusive thoughts, hypervigilance, frustration.

  • Physical: Fatigue, rapid heartbeat, digestive system symptoms, muscle tension, restlessness and inability relax, dizziness, insomnia, fatigue, sensations of hot/cold.

My integrative somatic approach honours anxiety's multi-layered nature, and blends somatic practices, somatic Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy, inner child healing and lifestyle adjustments to break the exhausting loop between physical symptoms and worry in the mind.

About Me

Hi! I’m Eveliina, or Eve — a somatic therapist specialising in anxiety with nine years of experience in occupational therapy and integrative wellness. My work lives at the intersection of neurobiology, psychology, and lifestyle — where science meets the messy, beautiful reality of being human.

My journey into nervous system healing began as a personal exploration of how modern lifestyle, societal norms and pressures, and disconnection from our biology and authentic self shape mental and physical well-being. Over time, this evolved into a professional mission: to help my clients reconnect with their body’s innate wisdom — gentle yet resilient — so they can address anxiety at its roots and feel empowered, even in a world that often asks them to override their needs and emotions.

I’m deeply curious about how these invisible pressures collide with our physiology to fuel anxiety and stress cycles. My approach blends clinical expertise with integrative somatic practices — honouring your whole self, not just symptoms — to restore balance between the life you live and the life your body craves. Think of it as rewilding your nervous system: partnering with its natural rhythms instead of fighting them, to create change that starts from within.

In ongoing therapy, we focus on holistic mind-body tools to ease symptoms, rewire and restore flexibility and capacity to the nervous system, and explore the root causes of anxiety from multiple angles for lasting change. Sessions involve exploring and addressing concerns or challenges you are experiencing, tailoring practices to your needs, making adjustments to daily routines based on your circumstances, and integrating strategies into daily life. We will discuss and choose tools and exercises for you to focus on between sessions to deepen progress, ensuring flexibility to adapt as your journey evolves.

Ending the Therapeutic Process

Review and guidance for ongoing healing

To end our work together, we’ll reflect on your progress and learnings, and pinpoint strategies to help you maintain the tools and progress you’ve gained. My goal is for you to feel confident in your ability to nurture your nervous system and navigate challenges. Life is unpredictable, and new obstacles or transitions may arise. If you ever need a refresher, or want to process a situational stressor, I’m here to help.
